Forensic Autopsy Technician II, Pensacola, FL

SALARY RANGE: $21.25 – $23.00/HOURLY

JOB DESCRIPTION
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare autopsy forms, diagrams, and specimen containers for toxicology, evidence, and tissue prior to autopsy
  • Photograph body, personal belongings, and evidence items for case documentation
  • Obtain decedent fingerprints for identification purposes
  • Perform “Y” incision and remove skull cap, remove and weigh all organs, and open and expose the small/large intestines for gross examination without assistance
  • Maintain toxicology, evidence, and tissue specimens for easy retrieval and keep appropriate logbooks and chain of custody when collecting, receiving, storing, or transferring bodies, evidence, toxicology, and tissue specimens
  • Restore body following postmortem examination by replacing organs, packing cavities, suturing the body closed, washing and disinfecting the remains, and returning the body to refrigerated storage
  • Release bodies to authorized parties and ensure bodies are correctly tagged (labeled). Maintain records for the reception, transfer, and release of bodies and personal effects
  • Clean morgue/attendant areas, instruments, equipment, floors, autopsy tables/attachments, dissecting area, and refrigerated storage by ensuring that surfaces are free of body fluids, airborne pathogens, and other undesirable materials
  • Assist with standard record keeping, scanning and labeling of photographs, and filing of paraffin tissue blocks and microscopic slides
  • Assist with general clerical duties (i.e., data entry, photocopying, receiving, opening, and sorting packages and supplies); enter data into the case management system
  • Operate necessary equipment (X-Ray, Body Lift, Autopsy Tables, etc.)
  • Demonstrate ability to perform all duties of the Forensic Specialist I at a level of proficiency which meets the performance standards of the Morgue Competency Checklist
  • All other duties as needed or required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma
  • Current Florida driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check, motor vehicle record review, and pre-employment urine drug screen
  • Must be able to move or lift 100 to 200 pounds by oneself or with the assistance of another
  • At least 3 years of experience as a Forensic Specialist I or equivalent job-related training or experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate degree or higher in any relevant field of study
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology
