The District 21 Medical Examiner’s Office in Fort Myers is seeking applicants for the position of Forensic Investigator (medicolegal death investigator). The District 21 Medical Examiner’s Office is N.A.M.E. accredited and a private medical examiner’s office. Qualifications include Associate Degree or higher with major course work in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Mortuary Science, Medical Technology and Biology or another related field. Autopsy experience, strong communication skills and a minimum of three years of work experience investigating deaths, crimes or accidents are preferred. A medical background is highly desirable. Responsibilities include determining the jurisdiction of medical examiner cases, conducting death scene investigations, interacting with law enforcement/medical personnel/families of the deceased and assisting physicians with autopsies. Continuing education and certification by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigation will be required. Drug-Free Workplace; successful completion of criminal history background investigation; must possess a valid Florida Driver’s license which must be maintained during employment.
Must be able to stand for long periods of time and lift and move bodies over 100 pounds; constant exposure to conditions such as radiation, hazardous chemicals, noise, wet, slippery floors/surfaces, odors, and weather; constant communication with staff and outside agencies; communication includes verbal and written; visualize and otherwise identify, observe and assess. Manual and finger strength and dexterity are sufficient to operate surgical instruments. Work schedule includes weekends, holidays and shift work. Hourly rate minimum is $23.00 per hour and will be commensurate with experience and education.
